We are immensely proud to celebrate Janet Clark (Bagguley), one of our long‑standing members, and former Ladies Captain, and a true sporting trailblazer.
Janet is one of the original England Lionesses, selected to represent her country in the first‑ever official England women’s international football match, played against Scotland in November 1972. At just 17 years old, Janet was part of a pioneering group of women who broke down barriers and laid the foundations for the women’s game as we know it today.
In recognition of her contribution to English football history, Janet’s name is now enshrined at Wembley Stadium, appearing as part of the iconic “LIONESS” lettering along the players’ tunnel, ensuring her legacy will be seen by generations to come. She is also being honoured in national commemorations marking the early milestones of the England women’s team.
Away from the football pitch, Janet is as well known locally as she is nationally. Having just celebrated her 70 +1 birthday she still works part‑time as a postie around Buxton, a role that perfectly reflects her work ethic, energy and connection to the community. Retirement is clearly not part of her vocabulary.
Within our golf club, Janet has been a committed member for many years, serving with distinction as Ladies Captain and continuing to bring her trademark drive, warmth and straight‑talking passion to club life. Never one to stand quietly in the background, Janet embodies leadership, resilience and a love of sport that inspires everyone around her.
We are delighted to recognise and celebrate Janet’s extraordinary achievements — not just as an original Lioness, but as a valued member of our club, our town and our wider sporting history.
