Tour the course
Buxton & High Peak Golf Club, formed in 1887, and designed by J. Morris, is the oldest club in Derbyshire.
The course, located in the heart of the Peak District, on the outskirts of the beautiful Spa town of Buxton, is based on free-draining Limestone, and is certainly one of the most consistently playable in the area.
Often influenced by the prevailing wind, the 5,877 yard, par 69, course presents members, and visitors, with a challenging, and enjoyable, test of Golf.
The course has frequently been likened to an inland Links course, with the 4th, 5th, and 6th holes proving the point, and, although set some 1,100 feet above sea level, is not subjected to arduous hill climbs.
1st Hole
A gentle uphill slope to the green, marker pole indicates direction. Watch out for the rough on the right and the perfectly positioned bunker.
2nd Hole
A short par 4 for all, drive over the rough from the tee and position your ball on the fairway, reaching the green and not the bunkers is the secret to this hole.
3rd Hole
Uphill from the tee normally with an iron to reach the long green on this par 3 hole, but be careful it’s well bunkered.
4th Hole
A long par 4, with danger all around, especially over the quarry in the middle, accuracy is essential.
5th Hole
A great par 4 with a hidden green from most angles, Drive to the hump and aim your second shot for the yellow marker. Careful not to go out of bounds to the right.
6th Hole
A wonderful par 3, with lots of tricky obstacles including the big bunker that hides the green, and depending on the pin position accuracy is essential.
7th Hole
A par 4, one for long drivers straight down the middle as far as you can go, keeping in line with the marker, avoid the trees on the right.
8th Hole
A charming par 3, with plenty of scope for getting your birdie and a chance of the two’s pool, careful on club choice depending on the wind. Hidden bunkers guard the green.
9th Hole
A long par 5 over the “Old Racecourse”. Straight down the middle over the marker pole is your best option watching out for the rough either side of the fairway, but don’t forget the bunkers positioned around the green.
10th Hole
A tough par 3, hitting the green is essential to make your par.
11th Hole
A tough one for the men stroke index 1. Drive to the path in the distance for this dog legged hole. Avoid the quarry and out of bounds all along the right side.
12th Hole
Back round the quarry again, straight shots required on this par 5, drive for the marker but don’t go too far! A great birdie opportunity but don’t forget take in the scenery of the Peak District and Buxton itself.
13th Hole
The last of the par 3’s, a delightful short hole, with trouble all around, aim for the green as accuracy is essential.
14th Hole
A long par 4, with a pond to catch the “hooker”. Keep to the fairway at all costs, the trees can be unforgiving.
15th Hole
A straight forward par 4. The flag in the distance, trees either side, avoid the bunker right of the fairway
16th Hole
The hole with no danger, aim for the marker post from the tee and keep straight, the green can be a toughie depending on pin positions.
18th Hole
The home straight, in line with the marker pole, avoid the bunkers either side of the green to give yourself the chance of your last par of the day.
